Greetings!
I apologize for this late notice, but I must inform our wonderful (and
wAnderful) sangha that Sean McCandless and I will be conducting our annual
BIG SIT at the Turkey Point Lighthouse within Elk Neck State Park (Cecil
County) on SUNDAY 14 October.
I don't have my notes with me, but I believe this is our sixth (maybe our
seventh) year participating in this event from this location.
As most of you know, Turkey Point is the terminal end of the Elk Neck
Peninsula -a 15 mile long, heavily forested cone-shaped peninsula that runs
from north to south. From our circle, we are awarded a 200 degree view of
the upper reaches of the Cheasapeake, Elk River, and three counties. The
geography of the prninsula makes our Big Sit site a perfect migrant trap as
songbirds, swallows, woodpeckers, raptors, and most others taxa funnel
their way south down the peninsula.
In years past, we have noted as many as 99 species in just nine hours of
"big-sitting!" Again, without checking my notes, I know our cumulative list
is nearing 150 species: we are hoping to add to tjis list on Sunday.
Knowing that nearly all of our area's Big Sit participants are heading out
tomorrow, I surmise that many of y'all would be free Sunday (?)... If you
are inclined, please feel free to join us. Regardless of winds,
night-flight potentials, or sky conditions, Turkey Point NEVER fails to
amaze and "wow" the Cecil birding veteran OR an Elk Neck first-timer!
I will be out there from 4am until at least 1pm -or until the birds settle
in for siesta... feel free to call me if you need directions, are
interested in bird activity, want to discuss the differences in the
Grateful Dead's sound before and after the the "Wall of Sound." My cell
