Interesting to hear these differences. The 20+ siskins at our house now (arrived Friday) have been eating nyger from sock feeders, black oil sunflower (unshelled) from both an open tube feeder as well as one in a cage, and shelled sunflower (chips) from both an open tube feeder as well as one in a cage. I have spent a fair amount of time watching them (looking for a redpoll!) and at best they seem to have a slight preference for the shelled sunflower when there are only a few feeding, but as their numbers build they spread out to all of the above and move around a lot from feeder to feeder with no apparent preference.

The Purple Finches here (only 2 or 3 at present) obviously prefer black oil sunflower in the shell.

Cheers!
