Hi Everybody:
I made a day long trip west yesterday.I hit several places in both Allegany and Garrett counties. I did not see any late warblers whatsoever the entire day. There were a few Yellow-Rumps here and there but not as many as I expected. Highlights are below:
ALLEGANY COUNTY ROCKY GAP: I only birded one part of the lake area...the location off of Pleasant Valley Rd. where the ampitheater parking is. The lake itself was heavily fogged in and visibility was next to nothing.
3 White-crowned sparrows 4 Purple Finches
GARRETT COUNTY FINZEL SWAMP...1 Lincoln's Sparrow
PINEY RESERVOIR: Too bad that shorebird season is pretty much over with in western MD...there were more mudflats showing than water except for the reservoir itself. On the road leading up to the dam on the left side I saw 1 each PECTORAL SANDPIPER AND GREATER YELLOW.LEGS.
MEADOWS LAKE...17 Ring-necked Ducks and 1 Scaup sp...(a female that was too distant to get a good enough look at).
YOUGH RESERVOIR...On Morgantown Rd. above a field on the way there I saw a male N. Harrier as I drove by. There was nothing notable at the reservoir itself.
RUSSELL ROAD was very quiet (early afternoon).
ALLEGANY COUNTY NORTH BRANCH...Among the 19 killdeer on the sewage mats were 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 7 AMERICAN PIPITS.
I then headed home and in Montgomery County as the sun was setting I made a quick stop through the partially completed Black Rock Reserve development (off of Rt. 28 opposite the old Black Rock Rd.intersection with Rt. 28. On one of the back roads (Seneca Run Ct.) I had some nice silhouette views of a Northern Harrier against the setting sun.
It was a beautiful day to be out and I really enjoyed the various degrees of the colorful changing leaves in western MD on a mostly sunny day.
