This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, October 23, at 7 AM.
Top birds this week are CINNAMON TEAL* in DE, LONG-BILLED CURLEW* and BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* in VA, and HENSLOW'S SPARROW* in DC.
Other birds of interest include CACKLING GOOSE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, RED-NECKED GREBE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, FRANKLIN'S GULL, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, SEDGE WREN, BICKNELL'S THRUSH, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, sparrows, DICKCISSEL, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
A CINNAMON TEAL* molting into breeding plumage was seen on Oct 21 from the Bear Swamp Tower in Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE.
A LONG-BILLED CURLEW* was seen on an American Birding Association boat trip on Oct 18 in Accomack Co, VA. Perhaps the same bird was found on Oct 20 in Wachapreague Marsh, Accomack Co, VA. The BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* continued at Swan Cove, Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA with a sighting on Oct 17.
A HENSLOW'S SPARROW* was found in Kenilworth Park, Washington, DC on Oct 21. It was between a soccer field and the stadium near the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens marsh.
The influx of YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, RUBY-CROWNED and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, HERMIT THRUSHES, PURPLE FINCHES, and PINE SISKINS continued.
Six CACKLING GEESE were spotted at Governor Bridge Natural Area, Prince Georges Co, MD on Oct 16. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE flew over Millstream park, Centreville, Queen Anne's Co, MD on Oct 21.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen from the tower at Little Creek WMA, Kent Co, DE on Oct 18.
Hawk watches reported large numbers of SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and AMERICAN KESTREL. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew by the Snickers Gap Hawk Watch, Clarke Co, VA on Oct 21. An immature GOLDEN EAGLE passed the Cromwell Valley Park Hawk Watch, Baltimore Co, MD on Oct 22.
A FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen in Patapsco Harbor from Middle Branch Park, Baltimore Co, MD on Oct 17.
A female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD tarried briefly in a back yard in Herndon, Fairfax Co, VA on Oct 18. A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD visited a feeder in Manchester, Carroll Co, MD on Oct 18.
SEDGE WREN was seen at Saddlebrook Community Park, Bowie, Prince Georges Co, MD on Oct 16. Another SEDGE WREN was found at Irvine Nature Center, Baltimore Co, MD on Oct 20.
A BICKNELL'S THRUSH was heard in Upper Watts Branch Park, Rockville, Montgomery Co, MD on Oct 19.
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found in Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD on Oct 20 and in Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Oct 21. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen in Kinder Farm Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Oct 20.
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW appeared in four locations this week including Huntmaster Rd, Montgomery Co, MD on Oct 16; Old Trail in Crozet, Albemarle Co, VA on Oct 17 and 18; Nutters Neck WMA, Wicomico Co, MD on Oct 17; and the Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch, Sussex Co, DE on Oct 21. A LARK SPARROW was seen on the unpaved road going north from the Assateague Island SP parking lot, Worcester Co, MD on Oct 20. LINCOLN'S SPARROW was found at multiple locations throughout MD, DC, and VA. NELSON'S SPARROW was seen along Fowler's Beach Rd, Sussex Co, DE.
A female DICKCISSEL was seen at Tubby Cove, Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD on Oct 20. A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was spotted around Cape Charles, Northampton Co, VA on Oct 16 and 17.
