Hi Kurt, wasn't able to open the link, but I can say that many corvids will gather around dead conspecifics. I believe that this serves a social function to inform group members about who is dead and begin to adjust social hierarchy, etc. I have seen it several times with magpies and crows gathering around road-killed group members, and I know Bernd Heinrich has discussed it in some of his books.
