Hi everyone,
I had a couple of great days birding this weekend. I birded Point Lookout
State Park on Saturday which was very birdy despite the winds. Some
highlights included a total of 6 CAVE SWALLOWs, and a single POMARINE
JAEGER heading down the Bay; at one point a BALD EAGLE took notice of the
jaeger and started pursuing it, after the jaeger got some distance, a
LAUGHING GULL took up the chase for a few seconds before it thought better
of it! The jeager chased a few other gulls well south of the point before
I lost it. There were many passerines in the woods including a late
BLACKPOLL WARBLER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETs were everywhere, and groups of
PINE SISKINS were coming in off the Bay most of the day. I took a short
trip down Long Neck Road on the way home and located 2 CAVE SWALLOWs with a
group of TREEs, one juvenile WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER,
and 4 DUNLIN were in a puddle in the field with a flock of KIILLDEER.
On Sunday, Jo Anna and I headed to Garrett County, there are still a lot of
downed trees and folks without power from the snows associated with the
storm Sandy, many parks were closed or had inaccessible trails and Linemen
were everywhere working hard to restore the power lines. Highlights from
the day included good numbers of ducks at all sites best being two adult
male WHITE-WINGED SCOTERs at Piney Reservoir, at Deep Creek there were 5
Swallows- 2 BARN and three TREEs the latest I have seen in Garrett, we also
located a flock of 10 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLs in a spruce just North of the
rte 219 bridge.
