Subject: [MDBirding] probable yard Saw-whet

Hi all,

Early this AM (while still rather dark) a number of small passerines were scolding something in one of our thick evergreen privet bushes. We tried to carefully peer into the bush but unfortunately flushed a tiny owl which flew off in the direction of our pine trees. Didn't see much on it but its tiny size and low perch point to Northern Saw Whet. We will be keeping our ears open to see if the many small birds in our yard relocate it and start mobbing again. If relocated will post. Interestingly we had a NOSW in the yard in October about 7 years ago which a few birders got to see before it left at dusk.

The feeders have been filled now for about 3 days and we have a good number of Red-breasted Nuthatches plus the usual suspects; yesterday two male Purple Finches visited briefly but something scared them off and we haven't seen them again. Still checking all the neighborhood evergreens for more exciting species...
