Subject: [MDBirding] brief visit to Brrokside Gardens this AM

Hi --

When it got sunny we decided to check out Brookside Gardens (Mont. Co.) to see if there was anything about -- the place usually has a lot of lingering fruit and flowers at this time of year. Actually most of the fruit seems to be gone, stripped undoubtedly by the hoards of robins and catbirds earlier in the autumn, but still some berries about and still flowering blue & red Salvia in case a late hummer arrives. Also checked feeders at Brookside Nature Ctr.

Best birds:

Belted Kingfisher
Red-shouldered Hawk
Sharp-shinned Hawk (overhead)
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 2
Field Sparrow - 2
Swamp Sparrow - 1 (Nature Ctr.)
Purple Finch - 1 brownie (feeders)

Interestingly, despite an abundance of Goldfinches in gardens and at the feeders, no siskins and no r-b nuthatches either. Still, the area looks promising...

Also, no sign of the probable saw-whet owl we had earlier in the yard but probably around somewhere; will check more when I get back from a dental app't.
