This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, November 6, at
7 AM.

Top birds this week are storm-driven birds including BRANT, LEACH'S
STORM-PETREL, RED PHALAROPE, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, POMARINE JAEGER,
PARASITIC JAEGER, SOUTH POLAR SKUA*, LITTLE GULL, ARCTIC TERN, and
BLACK SKIMMER.

Other birds of interest include GOLDEN EAGLE, PURPLE GALLINULE*,
gulls, SHORT-EARED OWL, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE*, CAVE SWALLOW*, SNOW
BUNTING, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, sparrows, RED
CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, COMMON REDPOLL, and EVENING
GROSBEAK.

Sandy's strong winds pushed many coastal species inland. One hot spot
for birders was Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River between Harford
and Cecil Cos, MD. The area hosted LEACH'S STORM-PETREL on Oct 30 and
31, RED-NECKED GREBE, several RED PHALAROPES through Nov 4, POMARINE
and PARASITIC JAEGERS, LITTLE GULL on Nov 3 and 4, a first-winter
FRANKLIN'S GULL on Nov 1, and BLACK SKIMMER on Nov 1. Nearby Lapidum
in Harford Co had NORTHERN GANNET, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, RED
PHALAROPE, POMARINE JAEGER, ICELAND GULL, and BLACK SKIMMER.

Other storm-related sightings included BRANT at numerous inland
locations including the National Mall in Washington, DC on Oct 31.
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, RED PHALAROPE, ARCTIC TERN, and BLACK SKIMMER
were at Violette's Lock, C&O Canal, Montgomery Co, MD on Oct 30. RED
PHALAROPE, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, and POMARINE JAEGER were seen from
Piscataway Park, Prince Georges Co, MD on Oct 30. Numerous jaegers
were seen on the Chesapeake Bay. A BLACK SKIMMER was on Hart-Miller
Island, Baltimore Co, MD on Nov 1. An intermediate morph SOUTH POLAR
SKUA* was found at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Northampton Co,
VA on Oct 30.

Hawk migration continues with increasing numbers of RED-TAILED HAWKS
tallied at Hawk Watches. Multiple GOLDEN EAGLES were spotted at
Snickers Gap Hawk Watch, Loudoun Co, VA on Nov 2, 3, and 4. GOLDEN
EAGLE was seen at the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch, near Waynesboro, VA on
Nov 2 and at the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch, Northampton Co, VA on Nov 3 and
5. Three GOLDEN EAGLES flew by the Turkey Point Hawk Watch in Elk Neck
SP, Cecil Co, MD on Nov 4. A GOLDEN EAGLE flew over a golf course in
Rehoboth Beach, DE on Nov 4.

A possible juvenile PURPLE GALLINULE* that was injured was found in a
parking lot at Bethany Beach, DE on Nov 3. The bird was taken to a
wildlife rehabilitator.

A BLACK-HEADED GULL is once again in the parking lot at the Hunt
Valley Mall, Baltimore Co, MD; it was seen on Oct 31, Nov 3, 4, and 5.
An ICELAND GULL was found at Scientists Cliffs, Calvert Co, MD on Nov
3. A BLACK-TAILED GULL* was reported from Fort Armistead, Baltimore,
MD on Nov 1.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen flying up the Potomac River near Fletcher's
Boathouse in Washington, DC on Nov 1. Another SHORT-EARED OWL was at
Hain's Point in DC on Nov 3.

A Selasphorus species hummingbird survived the storm and continued to
visit a feeder in Herndon, Fairfax Co, VA. A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was
seen at the Blandy Experimental Farm, Clarke Co, VA on Nov 2, 4, and
5. Another was reported from a backyard in Leesburg, VA.

Fall is a great time to look for CAVE SWALLOW in our region. Sightings
this week came from Piscataway Park on Oct 30; LaGrange Lane, King
George Co, VA on Oct 30; Allegany Co, MD on Nov 3; six birds at Point
Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD on Nov 3; and Long Neck Road, St. Mary's
Co on Nov 3, 4, and 5.

BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES appeared in several areas in Cecil Co, MD. Two
SNOW BUNTINGS were at the Conowingo Dam area on Nov 4. Another was
along Jerry's Rd in north Harford Co, MD on Nov 5. A SNOW BUNTING was
at Reddish Knob, Augusta Co, VA on Nov 4.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen near the Kingsley parking lot,
Little Bennett RP, Montgomery Co, MD on Nov 1. An ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER was in Anacostia Park, Washington, DC on Nov 3. Another was in
Perryman Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Nov 2. Another was seen on the
north side of Charlottesville, VA on Nov 5. An adult male CONNECTICUT
WARBLER was seen on the Gwynns Fall Trail, Baltimore, MD on Nov 2.

AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS are arriving; there were sightings at Irvine
Nature Center, Owings Mills, Baltimore Co, MD and the Howard County
Conservancy in MD. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued at the Cape
Henlopen Hawk Watch, Sussex Co, DE. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in a
backyard in Harford Co, MD on Nov 4 and another was at Point Lookout
SP on Nov 5. A LARK SPARROW was seen in a backyard in Chesterfield Co,
VA on Nov 4. LINCOLN'S SPARROWS continued to be reported across the
region; some sites are Kenilworth Park in Washington, DC; Fort
Smallwood in Anne Arundel Co, MD; and Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA.

RED CROSSBILL was found at several locations including Swan Harbor,
Harford Co, MD on Nov 4; the Brantwood Golf Course, Elkton, Cecil Co,
MD on Nov 4; and Windsor Mill, Baltimore Co, MD on Nov 5. WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILL also appeared in several spots including Windsor Mill, MD on
Nov 4; Silver Spring, Montgomery Co, MD on Nov 4; near Deep Creek
Lake, Garrett Co, MD on Nov 4; Point Lookout SP on Nov 5; and Cape
Charles, Northampton Co, VA on Nov 4. COMMON REDPOLL was seen at Wye
Island, Queen Anne's Co, MD on Nov 4.

EVENING GROSBEAKS popped up at many feeders across the region
including Arlington, VA; Windsor Mill, MD; Queenstown, MD; Frostburg,
MD; Georgetown, DE; Woodstock, MD; and Elkton, MD.
