Subject: [MDBirding] Red Crossbill fly-over in Colesville

Hi all,

Barry and I had taken the dogs for a walk to Wheaton Regional Park (very quiet) and returned to find a lot more bird activity around our feeders and in our backyard trees. I was on the deck looking at some red-breasted nuthatches foraging in an old apple tree when suddenly about 7-8 RED CROSSBILLS flew over low, calling loudly -- and disappeared to the west. I got the distinct impression they had been in evergreens either in our upper yard or our neighbor's (both have spruce, hemlock, & pine -- all full of cones) and something had startled them. We grabbed our bins and walked the neighborhood in the general direction they had flown, checking all the possible trees, but no luck. This was about 11:30 AM. Maybe they will come back...
