Subject: [MDBirding] Carroll County, Kowomu Trail

I decided to go out for a short while this morning for a little birding and photography along one of my favorite haunts, the Kowomu trail and was quite surprised as to what I found. The highlights began with the hawks and they were numerous with 2 Red-shouldered, 3 Red-tails and what I am pretty sure was a Rough-legged patrolling one of the over-grown fields. Red-breasted nuthatches were anywhere you could find pines in an abundance. Lots of sparrows too with White-crowned, White-throated, Song and a bonus Fox Sparrow. I spotted a Barred Owl surveying the creek while being harassed by Northern flickers and a couple of Blue Jays. "I guess the crows took the day off".....

In the heavy woods I had a male Yellow-bellied sapsucker play camera ham allowing me numerous opportunities for nice poses while a brown creeper made his accent looking for morsels.

The Kowomu trail is a gravel affair just off route 97 and Saw Mill road before the curves into Union Mills. Its a nice place to spend the day with very very little traffic.

Other birds included a Pileated Woodpecker, wayward Gray Catbird, numerous chickadees and dark-eyed Juncos..
