Subject: [MDBirding] Snow Bunting, Thomas Point

There was a single Snow Bunting at this tiny park near Annapolis. For those planning to go, please note that it really is a tiny county park with only a few parking spaces at the end of the road. Also note that when you arrive, you will see that the road is blocked with gates. There are large signs stating that you must have a permit to enter with a vehicle but there is no place on the narrow road outside the park to leave a car. We called and were told that it is OK to drive in at this time of year. Apparently, the permit requirement is only for fishing.

The gates are unlocked and you are asked to close them behind you. There is enough space on the right, just past the gates, for a couple of cars, if you want to walk through the park as we did. Otherwise, there are a few spaces all the way at the end of the road, where the Snow Bunting was found. Walking from the gate, it was maybe 20 minutes at a birding pace. Other birds included numerous White-crowned Sparrows, White-breasted Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Juncos, Red-belllied Woodpeckers, Fish Crows. A few Buffleheads way out in the water - one a group of males and the other a group of females.

All in all probably best to go to Ft. McHenry if it is within reasonable distance from you.

I'm just grateful that we didn't have to go to the Cape Henlopen dunes in the bitter winter cold this year!
