Subject: [MDBirding] DC bird

Hi All,

I've been offline, but want to share a good bird observation from Sunday at Hains Point in DC. My wife and I had a hour to kill so we went to Hains Point to take a leisurely walk. At the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac we happened upon Frank Hawkins. We chatted a bit about his recent Short-eared Owl observation at the same location and then bid him goodbye. A few moments later I heard Frank yelling about some bird and pointing above me. I looked around knowing it was something good, but there were many gulls, cormorants and waterfowl around. I yelled back for more clarification, and I finally heard him say something about egret moving in line with the tower. This time I luckily got on the bird in question and saw a small, compact white egret flying away from me - my second DC Cattle Egret of the Year!

As it flew into the distance Frank told me he saw it well as it flew down the Anacostia and then right over my wife and I. I love these aspects of birding - a fellow birder frantically waving their arms and altering you to something. The anticipation and thrill that comes with knowing if you can get on the bird, you'll be treated to something special is what it's all about! How true it is that you NEVER know what you're going to see when you strap on those bins and jump into the field - even if it's just a leisurely stroll in a City Park at mid day.

Thanks Frank!
