Top bird this week is WHITE-WINGED DOVE* in MD.
Other birds of interest include waterfowl, BROWN PELICAN, GREAT WHITE HERON, CATTLE EGRET, GOLDEN EAGLE, SANDHILL CRANE, BLACK-HEADED GULL, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, hummingbirds, WESTERN KINGBIRD, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, COMMON RAVEN, CAVE SWALLOW, SNOW BUNTING, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, sparrows, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, COMMON REDPOLL, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE* was seen Nov 9 at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD; it has not been seen since then.
BRANTS were seen during much of the week from Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel Co, MD. WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen on Nov 7 at Gateway in Howard Co, MD, the GE Retention Pond, Howard Co, MD, and at Piney Reservoir, Garrett Co, MD. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and two LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen Nov 6 from Hains Point, SW DC.
BROWN PELICANS were frequently seen this past week in and close to the Chesapeake Bay from Anne Arundel and Queen Anne's Co, MD.
The GREAT WHITE HERON was still being seen at Big Pool in Washington Co, MD with a report from Nov 8. A CATTLE EGRET was seen Nov 12 at Hains Point, SW DC.
Hawk migration continued with reports of NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and GOLDEN EAGLES. NORTHERN GOSHAWKS were reported from Kiptopeke St Pk, Northampton Co, VA on Nov 6, 8, 9, and the 11th. GOLDEN EAGLES were seen with six at the Town Hill Hawk Watch, Allegany Co, MD on Nov 6; one at the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch, near Waynesboro, VA on Nov 6, 7, and 8; one at the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch, Northampton Co, VA on Nov 8; one Nov 9 at Harvey's Knob Hawkwatch, near Roanoke, VA; and two at the Snickers Gap Hawk Watch, Loudoun Co, VA on Nov 10 and one on Nov 12. A GOLDEN EAGLE was also seen Nov 11 in Upper Marlboro, Prince George's Co, MD. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flew over the Snickers Gap on Nov 8. A dark phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen Nov 12 at Terrapin Park, Stevensville, Queen Anne's Co, MD.
SANDHILL CRANES were seen Nov 11 at the Nazarene Church Wetlands, Rockingham Co, VA.
A BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen again throughout the week in the parking lot at the Hunt Valley Mall, Baltimore Co, MD. A BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen Nov 11 mixed in with a flock of Laughing Gulls on a mud flat in the Patuxtent River across from Mt. Calvert, MD.
Two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were seen Nov 10 and 11 along Magotha Road, Northampton Co, VA.
Selasphorus species hummingbirds were reported from a number of locations including a feeder near Bluemont, Loudoun Co, VA from the 8th on. Another, a likely Rufous, was photographed visiting a feeder on Nov 10 in Dayton, Rockingham Co, VA. And still another was photographed Nov 12 at Green Springs Garden Park, Fairfax Co, VA. The hummer visiting a feeder in Herndon, Fairfax Co, VA, was banded on Nov 8 and is an adult female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD. Another one that is visiting a feeder in Rockingham Co, VA was banded on Nov 12 and is a hatch-year female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was found Nov 10 on the west side of the Ocean City (MD) Airport, Worcester Co, MD, along Rte 611. It was seen again on the 11th and 12th.
The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at the Blandy Experimental Farm, Clarke Co, VA continued to be seen throughout the week.
A COMMON RAVEN was seen Nov 7 at Oxbow Lake, Anne Arundel Co, MD. Another was seen Nov 11 at Northwest Branch Park, Montgomery Co, MD.
CAVE SWALLOWS continued to be spotted in the area with one flying over Governor Bridge, from Prince George's Co into Anne Arundel Co, MD on Nov 6; and on Nov 11 two were seen at the Bayside Campground and one at the Assateague SP, Worcester Co, MD.
Two SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD throughout the week. Two SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Thomas Point SP, Anne Arundel Co, MD Nov 7; three were there on Nov 9 and one on Nov 10. Ten were seen and photographed Nov 8 at the Swan Creek dredge containment facility in northern Anne Arundel Co, MD.
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS turned up at a variety of locations as did several late warbler species such as a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER at Herring Creek Park, Worcester Co, MD on Nov 11.
AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were seen throughout the week with one Nov 7 at the Mt Pleasant Farm, Howard County Conservancy, MD; one in a yard in Frederick Co, MD Nov 7; and two on Nov 12 at SKY MEADOWS SP, Fauquier Co, VA. VESPER SPARROWS were seen Nov 6 at Patterson Park, Baltimore, MD; on Nov 10 at the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Loudoun Co, VA; and on Nov 11 in western Howard Co, MD. Both NELSON'S and SEASIDE SPARROWS were seen Nov 8 at the Pleasure House Point Natural Area, VA Beach, VA. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen Nov 11 at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA.
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen in several locations throughout the region.
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE showed up at a feeder Nov 11 in New Windsor, Carroll Co, MD.
RED CROSSBILLS were found at several locations including Colesville, Montgomery Co, MD on Nov 6; in Columbia, Howard Co, MD on Nov 6; Kiptopeke St Pk, Northampton Co, VA on Nov 8. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS also appeared in several spots including feeders throughout the week; Kiptopeke St Pk on Nov 6; Town Hill Hawk Watch on Nov 6; Windsor Mill, MD on Nov 4; and Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on Nov 9. Both RED and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen from the Kiptopeke on Nov 10, 11, and 12; both species were also seen from the Snickers Gap HW on Nov 11.
On Nov 6 a COMMON REDPOLL visited a feeder in Charles Town, WV and on the 9th a COMMON REDPOLL visited a feeder in Frederick Co, VA just south of Winchester.
EVENING GROSBEAKS seemed to pop in lots of locations including many feeders and several of the area's hawk watches.
