Subject: Re: [MDBirding] Rarity Roundup - Summary

Thanks for this great summary, Bill! And thanks to Bill, Matt, and Mark
for organizing such a fun weekend. For those on MD and DC Birding who
haven't tried the Rarity Roundup, you really ought to check it out--what a
great way to spend a weekend!

I joined Jim Brighton and Mike Walsh on Saturday (10 Nov 2012) in the
Pocomoke Territory. We were excited to have Rusty Blackbirds on both sides
of the VA/MD line along Wagram Rd (access from Rt 705 [=Sparrow Rd], from
US 13 in VA just S of MD line). One big hope on a Rarity Roundup is that
you might see a new state bird--and I did! Rusty Blackbird in VA.

We had multiple Eastern Screech-Owls and a very nice Barred Owl at Hickory
Point--back in MD of course. We really did stay in MD all day long--we
couldn't help it if our territory bordered VA. :)

A large flock of yellowlegs (mostly Greater but also several Lesser) flew
over us in Pocomoke City and included 3 dowitchers. Great spot by Jim on
the dowitchers. We also had a White-rumped Sandpiper, a Least Sandpiper,
and a Common Yellowthroat nearby. We were surprised to count 25 Bald
Eagles standing together at the Pocomoke Sand Pits (private, viewing from
outside only).

We had other highlights as well, but maybe we were most pleased with
finding 95 species in the Pocomoke Territory--sometimes considered a
"lesser" territory owing to its distance from the coast. We liked it!

As Bill mentioned, all of our details will find their way into eBird over
the next few days.

Have fun,
