Subject: [MDBirding] late Ruby-throat

Hi All,

Yesterday I led a walk at a privately owned forest patch just off the Alameda here in Baltimore City, for the organization Baltimore Greenspace. It was a wonderful day and some good birds decided to show off. Several HERMIT THRUSH were hanging out still, as were a fair number of WINTER WRENS and a juvenile RED-TAILED HAWK. We also had a flyover BALD EAGLE. The most interesting bird of the walk, was a briefly glimpsed, very late, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD. It seemed to be a youngish/moulting male. Very, very cool!

Several people have expressed interest in this hummingbird and, because of the late date, suggested it might not be a Ruby-throat after all. I am satisfied that it is, but it's good to be sure and I understand that Dan Haas and Time Carney were thinking about trying for it today from the street bordering the wood lot. I'm sure if they turn anything up, they'll pass along the info.

Good Birding!

Mike H.
