Ron Gutberlet and I headed west this morning, first to very cold Garrett County and then on to Allegany County. Our day was fairly unproductive until we got to Rocky Gap in the early afternoon. One of the first birds we saw there was a Snow Bunting. It was initially seen flying out over the lake. It dropped very briefly on to the beach several times, but eventually headed back out over the water and disappeared in the direction of the dam.
We spent most of our time walking around the east and west ends of the park hoping for crossbills or grosbeaks. Finally, Ron spotted some movement in the spruces near the hotel. When we got a scope on the birds, we could see that they were White-winged Crossbills (3m, 2f).
When we were searching through some other spruces for more crossbills, Ron noticed birds in some nearby bushes. We were both quite surprised to see a Northern Parula pop out along with the titmice and Golden-crowned Kinglets. It was our only warbler of the day.
