This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at about noon.
Top birds this week are: WESTERN GREBE, YELLOW RAIL, NORTHERN LAPWING, BLACK-HEADED GULL, WESTERN KINGBIRD, CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, CAVE SWALLOW, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
Other birds of interest include: BRANT, HARLEQUIN DUCK, EARED GREBE, AMERICAN BITTERN, OSPREY, BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, COMMON RAVEN, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, late warblers, VESPER SPARROW, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, BLUE GROSBEAK, crossbills, COMMON REDPOLL, AND EVENING GROSBEAK.
The WESTERN GREBE* continued in Sinepuxent Bay, Berlin MD (Worcester Co), with sightings through at least Nov 24. A YELLOW RAIL* was flushed at Assateague SP, Worcester Co MD, on Nov 24. Slightly out of our normal reporting area was a NORTHERN LAPWING* at Back Bay NWR, Virginia Beach VA, seen by multiple observers on Nov 20. The BLACK-HEADED GULL continued in Cockeysville MD (Baltimore Co), with the latest sighting on Nov 26 in Hunt Valley. A CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was reported Nov 20 & 22 in Tilghman, Talbot Co MD. The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continued at Green Spring Garden Pk, Fairfax Co VA, with sightings through Nov 23. A possible RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was reported Nov 20 at a feeder in Fauquier Co VA, and the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continued in a yard in Harford Co MD, with sightings at least through Nov 25. CAVE SWALLOWS were recorded at the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch, Northampton Co VA, a single bird on Nov 20 and five on Nov 25. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was reported at the Turkey Point Hawk Watch, Cecil Co MD, on Nov 22.
The BRANT continues at Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel Co MD, with sightings through Nov 26. The HARLEQUIN DUCKS are back, seen frolicking all week around the Ocean City Inlet jetty, Worcester Co MD. An EARED GREBE was spotted Nov 20 near the WESTERN GREBE in Sinepuxent Bay, Berlin MD. One AMERICAN BITTERN was seen Nov 21 at Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co DE, and another was spotted Nov 23 at Assateague I. NS, Worcester Co MD.
Single late OSPREY were seen from the Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch on Nov 25 & 26, and a probable OSPREY was reported Nov 25 at Lake Anna SP, Spotsylvania Co VA. BALD EAGLES are fairly common in our area, but a flight of at least 50, reported Nov 24 over Allen's Fresh, Charles Co MD, must have been exciting. Single NORTHERN GOSHAWKS were reported, at Kiptopeke Hawk Watch on Nov 20, and at Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch (Sussex Co DE) on Nov 23. Also at Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch, a GOLDEN EAGLE was recorded on Nov 25.
The WESTERN KINGBIRD at the Ocean City Airport (Berlin, Worcester Co MD) continued at least to Nov 20. Another continuing bird was the LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE seen all week at Blandy Farm, Clarke Co VA. Virginia hosted other LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES, one Nov 23 at Sky Meadows SP (Fauquier Co), and another in a yard in Loudon Co on Nov 25. The COMMON RAVEN invasion of the lowlands continues, with a sighting Nov 22 at Huntley Meadows, Fairfax Co VA.
Single NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were seen Nov 23, at the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch, and at Point Lookout SP, St Mary's Co MD. RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were seen throughout the reporting area all week. A few left-over warblers were spotted in MD: a NASHVILLE WARBLER Nov 20 at Bladensburg Waterfront Pk (Prince George's Co) on Nov 20, a NORTHERN PARULA at Rocky Gap SP (Allegany Co) on Nov 25, a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER at the picnic area of Susquehanna SP (Cecil Co) on Nov 24 & 25, an OVENBIRD on the Northampton Furnace Trail of Loch Raven Res. (Baltimore Co) on Nov 23, and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT just outside Sandy Point SP on Nov 24.
VESPER SPARROWS were reported, one Nov 20 at Truitt's Landing, Worcester Co MD, another at the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch on Nov 25, and a third at Irvine Nature Center (Baltimore Co MD) on Nov 26. On Nov 25, single LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported, along Jasontown Rd, Taneytown, Carroll Co MD, and also at Kiptopeke Hawk Watch. A flock of 15 SNOW BUNTINGS was reported Nov 20 at Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch, and single birds were seen at Little Creek WMA (Kent Co De) on Nov 24, along Wilkinson Rd in Havre de Grace MD (Harford Co), also on Nov 24, in Rocky Gap SP on Nov 25, and the continuing bird at Green Spring Garden Pk, seen on Nov 23. Late ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS were spotted, at Susquehanna SP (MD) on Nov 20, and continuing at GREEN SPRING GARDEN Pk on Nov 23. A BLUE GROSBEAK was seen at the Ocean City Airport on Nov 20 & 22.
The crossbill irruption continued, with both RED CROSSBILLS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS* widely seen east of the mountains all week. The COMMON REDPOLL irruption continued also, with sightings mostly during the first part of the week. Finally, a flock of seven EVENING GROSBEAKS was reported from the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch on Nov 20.
Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, DE-Birds list servers, the mdbirding website, and also from eBird records.
