Today Allen Lewis, Jeff Culler and I went to western MD looking for crossbills. As Jeff has already reported, we found 4 White-winged Crossbills (WWCB) at Rocky Gap State Park. Allen spotted the first one through my sun roof in a pine tree at the camp store. Here is a photo by Jeff of the lone female who was with 3 males. http://www.flickr.com/photos/43440320@N04/8228313610/in/contacts/
On the way home we stopped at Resthaven Memorial Cemetery at 9501 Catoctin Mountain Hwy (US 15 N), Frederick, MD 21701. Apparently it is the only cemetery in MD where you can be buried with your pet, but we wern't staying. As soon as we arrived I spotted 3 birds that flew into the sun that were possible WWCB. It took another 45 minutes of searching until Jeff spotted a male WWCB perched towards the top of a conifer tree. It was near an Angel section that is north of the veterans section.
We topped off the day with the Red-throated Loon at Centennial Lake that Bill Hill had just found. Unfortunately, I later heard that the loon was observed flying off at 4:15 pm.
