I made a quick stop at the upper Loch Raven dam around 1:15 today and
found the SNOW GOOSE roosting on the lip of the dam, as Peter
indicated. The CACKLING GOOSE was swimming with Canada's in a cove
above the dam and just opposite the parking lot, an easy binocular
bird. It was a very distinctive individual, with upper parts that were
much paler and grayer than the Canadas, with broad whitish fringes. The
breast was also very pale, and the cheek patch was rather wide and very
bright white. Thanks to those who found and reported this bird!

The Snow Goose was right at the edge of the main Loch Raven Dam at 3:30
today, surrounded by hundreds of Canada Geese. I did not immediately
see the Cackling Goose.About 4:00 I was walking on Loch Raven Dr.
below the dam when waves of Canada Geese started flying south. The
Snow Goose was not one of the birds in flight. I looked over the
flying birds (several hundred in total) with binocs, searching for the
Cackling Goose. Finally, I saw a much smaller goose with a fairly
long, slender neck and a very small head. Im not convinced this was a
Cackling Goose. Possibly one of the small races of Canada Goose.Peter
