Hi Folks!
Keep your feeders up! Just before noon today I saw a Selasphorus
hummingbird at my feeder. I grabbed my camera and fretted until it showed again. Ten
minutes of waiting until I finally I saw it well enough to determine that
it is an immature male. While taking a picture as it perched, it suddenly
zipped off and ....it chased another hummingbird! The second bird found a
way to sneak in when I was ready with the camera. It did not stay long. The
immature male is aggressive and noisy and has laid claim to the feeders.
A couple of reviewers believe they are an immature male Rufous and a
female Rufous/Allen's [with the odds strongly in favor of Rufous].
There are 3 feeders. The male prefers the one attached to the house near
the rear door. Both visit the Pineapple Sages in the garden. The second bird
tries to come in the yard, but is chased most times.
My address is: 9119 Bay Avenue, North Beach, Calvert County. There is
parking available in the free lot between Bay and Cheaspeake at 5th Street if
you cannot find one on Bay near my house.
You may walk in the yard. I have set out a couple chairs.
On Saturday the Town is closing Bay Avenue to vehicle traffic at 9 AM.
There will be a parade at Noon. Bay Avenue will not open for cats until after
7 PM.
On Satrurday and Sunday, a neighbor trying to sell his house is having an
Open House. No idea if that will scare the birds.
