Top birds this week are: YELLOW RAIL* in VA, PARASITIC JAEGER in VA, ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD* in DE, SAY'S PHOEBE* in VA, WESTERN TANAGER* in VA and LE CONTE'S SPARROW* in VA.
Other birds of interest include waterfowl, NORTHERN BOBWHITE, RED-THROATED LOON, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, AMERICAN BITTERN, OSPREY, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds including RUFF, BLACK-HEADED GULL, ICELAND GULL, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, SHORT-EARED OWL, hummingbirds including RUFOUS, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, CAVE SWALLOW, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, COMMON RAVEN, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, sparrows, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, crossbills, COMMON REDPOLL, AND EVENING GROSBEAK.
A YELLOW RAIL* was seen on private property Dec 2 in Northampton Co, VA.
A second-cycle LITTLE GULL was seen Dec 3 from the Kiptopeke Hawkwatch, Northampton Co VA.
A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen Dec 2 flying over the ocean from 83rd St, Virginia Beach, VA.
An ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD* is still visiting a feeder at a home in Newark, DE with the most recent report from Dec 1.
A SAY'S PHOEBE* flew over the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch on Dec 4.
A WESTERN TANAGER* is being seen at Settlers Mill, James City VA with reports from Nov 27 and Dec 1.
A LE CONTE'S SPARROW* was seen Dec 2 on private property in Northampton Co, VA.
A SNOW GOOSE and a CACKLING GOOSE were seen Nov 28 and 29 near the dam at Loch Raven Reservoir, Baltimore Co, MD. A couple of CACKLING GEESE were reported Dec 1 in the Potomac at Constitution Gardens, DC. A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen Dec 2 in a pond on Narrow Back Rd west of Bridgewater in Augusta Co, VA; two were seen there Dec 3.
A EURASIAN WIGEON was seen Dec 1 at Snow Goose Pond, Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA. Seven SURF SCOTERS were seen Nov 29 at Burke Lake, Fairfax Co, VA. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen Nov 27 off of Hains Point, SW DC; four were seen Nov 27 on a private pond in Fauquier Co, VA.
A covey of NORTHERN BOBWHITES was seen Nov 30 near the pavilion next to the wetlands at Blandy Farm, Clarke Co VA.
A RED-THROATED LOON was seen Nov 28 at Centennial Lake, Howard Co, MD.
Nine AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS flew by the Kiptopeke Hawkwatch on Nov 28.
The AMERICAN BITTERN at the Dutch Gap Conservation Area, Chesterfield Co, VA, was seen again Nov 29 and Dec 2.
Late OSPREYS continued to be seen this past week. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen from the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch on Nov 29. A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen Nov 28 at the Cromwell Valley Park Hawkwatch, Baltimore Co, MD. Two were seen Nov 29 from the Snicker's Gap Hawk Watch on the Clarke/Loudoun Co, VA line while another flew over the Harvey's Knob Hawkwatch near Roanoke, VA the same day.
Two SANDHILL CRANES were seen Nov 29 along Deep Landing Road, Huntingtown, Calvert Co, MD.
A RUFF was see Nov 27 and 28 in a flooded field on Rte 481, Damonstown Rd, Queen Anne's Co, MD; it has not been seen since. A number of shorebirds were reported from Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on Nov 28 including a RED PHALAROPE.
The BLACK-HEADED GULL continues at the Hunt Valley Towne Center, Cockeysville, Baltimore Co, MD, with the latest sighting on Dec 4. A first year Iceland Gull was seen Nov 27 and 30 at the Salisbury Landfill, Wicomico Co, MD. The landfill, no longer open to the public, must now be scoped from the wide unpaved shoulder on Naylor Mill Rd. An ICELAND GULL was also found in Hopewell, VA on Dec 2.
Two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were seen Dec 1 along Magotha Rd, Northampton Co, VA.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen flying over a field to the south of Harrison Road, Fauquier Co, VA on Dec 2.
The hatch year RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at Green Spring Garden Pk, Fairfax Co VA, was banded on Nov 29 and still being seen as of Dec 3. An adult female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD that was banded on Nov 8 continues to visit a backyard feeder in Herndon, VA. Two probable RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS were seen visiting feeders at 9119 Bay Avenue, North Beach, Calvert Co, MD, on Nov 29; at least one was still being seen through Dec 2. A Selasphorus sp hummingbird was briefly seen Nov 30 at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, Grasonville, Queen Anne's Co, MD.
The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at Blandy Farm, Clarke Co VA continued to be seen all week long. The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA, was also seen on the Rolling Meadow Trail throughout the week. The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in Hagerstown, MD has returned with sightings from Nov 30 through Dec 2. It was seen in the still undeveloped field across from the intersection of Hagers Crossing Dr and Capstone Dr behind the shopping center.
A COMMON RAVEN flew over the Little Patuxent Oxbow Lake Nature Preserve, Anne Arundel Co, MD Nov 29. One was also seen in Chesterfield Co and Richmond, VA on Dec 1.
A CAVE SWALLOW was seen from the Kiptopeke Hawkwatch Nov 27. Five CAVE SWALLOWS and a single Tree Swallow were seen Dec 3 on the trip to Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD.
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES are now also being reported in several locations in the northern counties of Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with a number of reports from Blandy in Clarke Co, as well as several of its neighboring counties.
Eight LAPLAND LONGSPURS and a single AMERICAN TREE SPARROW were seen Nov 30 along Lilypons Rd, just east of Rte 85 on the north side in the corn stubble field. Four LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen there on Dec 1 and 10 on the 2nd. A SNOW BUNTING was found at Rocky Gap SP, Allegany Co, MD on Nov 28 and another was seen at Hart-Miller Island on Dec 3.
Four AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were seen Dec 2 along Smith Rd, Jefferson Co, WV. Three NELSON'S SPARROWS and a possible SALTMARSH SPARROW were seen Nov 30 at the end of Taylor's Marsh Rd, Worcester Co, MD.
A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen again on the Hart-Miller Island trip on Dec 3. RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were reported from a number of locations this past week.
Both RED CROSSBILLS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continued to show up throughout the area this past week. A few of the sightings are reported below. Ninety-five RED CROSSBILLS and one EVENING GROSBEAK flew over the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch on Nov 27. RED CROSSBILLS also flew by the Hawkwatch on the 28th, 29th, and 30th along with a couple of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on the 29th. RED CROSSBILLS were seen at Blandy on Nov 30 and Dec 1. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen Nov 28 at Rocky Gap SP, Allegany Co, MD and at the Resthaven Memorial Cemetery, Frederick, MD. Both species were also seen at the Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, West Friendship, Howard Co, MD throughout the week. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were also seen Nov 30 at Font Hill Park, Ellicott City, MD and on Dec 1 at Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore. COMMON REDPOLL sightings also continued this past week with a report of three frequenting feeders on Nov 30 in Rumbly, Somerset Co, MD.
Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, DE-Birds list servers, the mdbirding website, and also from eBird records.
