Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, December 11,
2012, at 11:45 am.

Top birds this week are: BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE and ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD* in DE.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, PACIFIC/COMMON LOON,
NORTHERN BOBWHITE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SANDHILL CRANE, PURPLE
SANDPIPER, BLACK-HEADED GULL, hummingbirds including RUFOUS,
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE,
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, COMMON RAVEN, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, NG, sparrows,
SUMMER TANAGER, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, crossbills
and COMMON REDPOLL.

A BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was reported from Herring Point at Cape
Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE.

The previously reported ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD in Newark, DE continued to
be seen during the week.

A trip to Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on December 7 recorded
ROSS'S GOOSE, EURASIAN WIGEON and KING EIDER. A BRANT was at the
Mellen St. Bridge leading into Ft. Monroe, Hampton, VA on December 4.
A BRANT was in several locations at Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel Co,
MD seen on December 8. A young male EURASIAN WIGEON was in the pond at
Rum Point golf course, Worcester Co, MD on December 6 and 7. A COMMON
EIDER was at the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on December 7.
Another COMMON EIDER was at the CBBT, Northampton Co, VA on December
9.

A PACIFIC LOON* was at Fort Howard Park, Baltimore Co, MD on December
8. Another group of birders saw a COMMON LOON in the same area.
Investigations are continuing.

A NORTHERN BOBWHITE came to a yard in Callaway, St. Mary's Co, MD on
December 10.

A dark phase adult ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Cedar Creek Road,
Dorchester Co, MD on December 5. A light phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was
at Bombay Hook NWR, DE. The bird was over the fields near the Allee
House.

A SANDHILL CRANE was in fields near Deep Landing Road, Huntingtown,
Calvert Co, MD during the week.

Two PURPLE SANDPIPERS were working the short line of rocks just north
of the central parking area at Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel CO, MD on
December 8. Six PURPLE SANDPIPERS were on the South jetty where
Fishing Creek comes into the bay in Chesapeake Beach, Calvert Co, MD
on December 8.

The BLACK-HEADED GULL continues at the Hunt Valley Towne Center,
Cockeysville, Baltimore Co, MD, with the latest sighting on December
7. Another BLACK-HEADED GULL was at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA
on December 7.

A male RUFOUS HUMMING BIRD was at a feeder in North Beach, Calvert Co,
MD seen on December 5 and 8. A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was at Green Spring
Gardens in Alexandria, VA on December 6. A Selasphorus sp hummingbird
visited a backyard in Virginia Beach, VA, seen on December 5. Another
Selasphorus hummingbird is visiting a yard in Silver Spring,
Montgomery Co, MD first sighted on December 9.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER* was in Hopewell, VA near the intersection
of Pecan and Water Streets on December 8. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was at
the southeast corner of Rte.355 and Key Wallace Drive, Cambridge,
Dorchester Co, MD on December 5.

The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at Blandy Experimental Farm, Clarke Co, VA
continued to be seen all week long. Birders also enjoyed themselves
identifying the prey species that the Shrike had impaled on thorns in
the meadow. The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in Hagerstown, MD continues to be
seen with sightings from December 4 through December 6.

A COMMON RAVEN flew over Glen Falls, Calvert Co, MD on December 5.

A BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE was at Blandy Experimental Farm, Clarke Co,
VA on December 8. A probable BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE was at the Twin
Shields golf course in northern Calvert Co, MD on December 9.

LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen with flocks of HORNED LARKS and an
occasional AMERICAN PIPIT along Lilypons Road and Oland Road just east
of Rte. 85 on the north side in the corn stubble field during the
week. The hedgerows and weedy fields in the same area contained
WHITE-CROWNED, FOX and AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS. Four AMERICAN TREE
SPARROWS were seen at Blandy Experimental Farm, Clarke Co, VA on
December 8 and another AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was on Hart-Miller
Island, Baltimore Co, MD on December 10. The previously reported
NELSON'S SPARROW continued to be seen along Fowler's Beach Road, DE.

A female SUMMER TANAGER came to a suet feeder in Columbia, Howard Co,
MD with sightings during the week.

A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD continues at Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore
Co, MD seen on December 10. Eleven RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were counted as a
part of the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary Waterbird Survey, Anne Arundel
Co, MD on December 6. Six RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were on the C&O Canal, just
downstream of Blockhouse Point, Montgomery Co, MD on December 10.

Both RED CROSSBILLS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continued to show up
throughout the area this past week, including: a WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILL at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Howard Co, MD on December 5;
Six WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Soldier's Delight Natural Area,
Baltimore Co, MD on December 6 and another single on December 8;
Eleven WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at the former Fort Ritchie, Washington
Co, MD on December 7; Ninety four RED CROSSBILLS flew past the
hawkwatch platform at Kiptopeke SP, Northampton Co, VA on December 7;
A RED CROSSBILL just before the bridge to Assateague Island SP,
Worcester Co, MD on December 9 and a mixture of crossbills were at
Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE on December 9 .

A COMMON REDPOLL was at Sunset Park in Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD on
December 7.

and also from eBird records.
