I got gas this morning at a station near Fair Hill that has a small marshy drainage pond with about a half dozen small trees around it. A flock of about 50-60 starlings flew in, and as soon as they were overhead, the resident mockingbird started to scold them. The mocker flew into the tree where the starlings were landing and attacked several of the birds, giving a harsh "chuck" call the whole time. After about a minute of this the starlings gave up and flew away.
I've seen mockingbirds go after individual intruders, but never knew they would take on a whole flock.Impressive!
