Seeing Kurt Schwarz' report of a Common Raven in Howard County today has reminded me to post a report of the same species -- becoming more common by the year in mid-Maryland -- from a walk upstream along the C&O Canal from Pennyfield Lock this morning, Thursday, 12/13.
Our regular Thursday morning "Rolling Turnstones" group heard a Raven when we were pretty close to Blockhouse Point, midmorning. We never saw the bird but clearly heard its croaking.
The canal towpath was very birdy this morning, with a ton of sparrows, Wrens (Carolina and Winter) and (Golden-crowned) Kinglets, but our most rewarding sighting was of 9 Rusty Blackbirds. The blackbirds were at extremely close range on the wet margins of the canal, turning over leaves, giving us some of the neatest views of this species that we have ever had. In contrast to Common Raven, Rusty Blackbird has become increasingly uncommon, as all regular birders in our State know.
