I knew Rich in the late 1980s when we lived in Northern California. He
was a generous, funny, incredibly knowledgeable guy, and a real birding
prodigy. I remember him showing up at the tally rally for a Christmas
Count (Southern Marin?) even though he hadn't officially participated.
Instead, he had roamed freely around the count circle, and that evening
he politely pointed out all the good birds the various sector teams
might have missed during the day.

What a sad loss to the entire birding community.
