Oops, accidentally hit Send.

Meant to say that they were White-winged Crossbills. I've been surprised the couple of times I've heard them recently how similar they can sound to American Goldfinches. They sure don't look like them!

Jane Kostenko and I were chasing the reported white pelican at St. George's Island and Piney Point Lighthouse in St. Mary's today. No love there :(

While at Piney Point, a flock of dark bellied, dark winged birds flew overhead then away to the north out over the Potomac. We didn't see them at first but heard them thinking they would be American Goldfinches. They appeared a couple of times to veer to the east like they might come back toward land but they steadily moved away until they literally disappeared into the low lying clouds. The whole area is a mix of loblolly and Virginia pines so they could be almost anywhere.
