Bob Augustine and I drove up to Adams County,Pennsylvania, just north of the Maryland border, yesterday afternoon to see what raptors might be around. We spent about 2 1/2 hours driving the roads just south of the battlefield at Gettysburg.
We found about 20 Red-tailed Hawks, about nine or 10 kestrels, 2 Red-shouldered hawks, 2 Northern Harriers, and one Short-eared owl. The owl was in the fields along Pumping Station Road just past Bigham Road. It flew around over the fields, crossed the road several times, and eventually landed on a fence post along the road.
Regrettably, we did not find any Rough-legged hawks.
