The birds were re-found a few minutes later in a clump of hemlocks at the corner of 48th and Brandywine, NW DC (a few blocks off Western Ave.) and were still there when we left at about 2:15. They had been moving around a bit in the vicinity, mostly into hemlocks but once into a spruce tree along Butterworth.
I counted 22 at one point, and there was a high percentage of lovely pink males.
Thanks Hugh -- a new DC bird and a new New Year's bird for most of us!

A group of us, including but not limited to Lisa Shannon, Gail Mackiernan, and Barry Cooper, counted 22-23 White-winged Crosbills shortly after an American Crow had chased them out of their original hemlock tree.
Thanks to Hugh for posting such good directions, and for pointing us to the tree where they had landed.
