Hi Everybody,
The Kent County Bird Club will launch 2013 with a half-day trip to Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday the fifth of January including the Cedar Pt. and Hail Creek area (behind refuge signs). Nancy and I will be at the Dollar General parking lot opposite the east end of Spring St. on the side toward Philosopher's Terrace at 8:00 AM. South and west county residents may arrange to meet us at the Eastern Neck Narrows at about 8:30 AM. Eastern Neck Island is great for waterfowl concentrations including hundreds of Tundra Swans, and large numbers of scaup, geese, buffleheads, goldeneyes, and dabblers. Despite the recent cold snap there should still be lots of waterfowl around. Recent sightings have included Brant, white-fronted goose, and Eurasian Wigeon. The Island is also good for landbirds with its abundance of hedgerows, woodlots, and marshland including woodpeckers (Red-headed has been seen recently), Brown-headed Nuthatch, towhee, thrasher, thrushes, and sparrows. We look forward to your company for some mid-winter birding - dress warmly and bring snacks. The current forecast is calling for partly cloudy weather with temperatures in the low to mid 30s and a brisk northwesterly breeze.
Good birding,
Walter Ellison & Nancy Martin
