Subject: [MDBirding] Western Maryland - slim pickings

I made another run out to Somerset County, PA (just north of Garrett Co. MD) for work today and, as always, scheduled in some time for a little bit of birding.
The ground in Garrett, Allegany, and most of Washington Counties is covered with a peculiar white, icy substance which is, as I seem to recollect, called "snow".

Just for the heck of it I stopped into Finzel Swamp just to see if I could get in. The road to the preserve was plowed but slick and icy. The road into the swamp was (predictably) impassable even by foot. The preserve would probably make for some excellent snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, though (while birding, of course)
I almost got stuck trying to turn around and get out and I would NOT recommend exploring deep into the area without four-wheel drive.

I did get my FOY black-capped chickadees, though, and I swear that while driving from Hancock to DC I was getting one-buteo-per-mile just watching the roadside
