My bad luck with finding rarities continues! I drove the two hours to Cambridge and saw NO ducks at all by the RT 50 bridge on the Talbot side. I went into town and checked out the marina and park, where I saw all of two scaup and a handful of buffleheads. On my way north again I stopped at the bridge, where I saw three female buffleheads and got excited thinking surely the goldeneye was with them, but no luck. I crossed over to the other side of RT 50 and set my scope up at the marina. As I was doing that a solitary, small, chunky grayish duck flew downriver and I lost sight of it when it reached the middle of the water. It could easily have not been the goldeneye, and if it was my target bird, a glimpse isn't worth anything.
On the way home north of Elkton I saw a robin in someone's yard, which is always nice to see in January. Our Carolina wrens seem to be staking a claim to the nest they built last year. They tucked it into an abandoned robin's nest on a bend of drainpipe under the garage eave. Seems a bit early to look for a nesting site.
