Top birds this week are TRUMPETER SWAN in VA, TUFTED DUCK and BARROW'S GOLDENEYE in MD, WESTERN GREBE in VA, SANDHILL CRANE in MD, RAZORBILL in DE, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in MD and VA, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD in MD.
Other birds of interest include CACKLING GOOSE, EURASIAN WIGEON, COMMON EIDER, HARLEQUIN DUCK, GREAT CORMORANT, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, BROWN PELICAN, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, NORTHERN HARRIER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SORA, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, BLACK-HEADED GULL, western DOWNY WOODPECKER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, COMMON RAVEN, TREE SWALLOW, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, WOOD THRUSH, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, warblers, crossbills, and COMMON REDPOLL.
A banded TRUMPETER SWAN was spotted on the Shenandoah R near Locke's Mill Rd (Clarke Co VA) on Jan 5. The TUFTED DUCK continued in Queen Anne's Co MD, with a sighting on Jan 5 near the Holiday Inn Express. By Jan 7, the bird had moved a little west, to the Mears Pt Marina. The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continued all week at the Choptank R bridge in Cambridge MD (Dorchester Co MD). A WESTERN GREBE was spotted on Jan 3 & 5 at Lake Anna, Spotsylvania Co VA, and another was seen in Virginia Beach VA on Jan 3. During a Jan 1 CBC, two SANDHILL CRANES were spotted at the Patuxent WRC (Anne Arundel Co MD), unfortunately in an area closed to the public. At Cape Henlopen SP (Sussex Co DE), eleven RAZORBILLS were spotted on Jan 6.
Apparently, four different RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS are now hanging out in central MD: one continues in a back yard in Silver Spring (Montgomery Co) at 9500 Thornhill Rd (visitors welcome), another in a back yard in North Beach (Calvert Co) at 9119 Bay Ave (visitors welcome), a third in Crofton (Anne Arundel Co), where visitors are also welcome, but for access, contact 443-867-4997 or <rickdove128...> The fourth MD RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD seems to be a new appearance, in Amberley (Anne Arundel Co). In VA, the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues at Green Spring Garden Pk (Fairfax Co), with sightings on Jan 5 & 7.
On Jan 2, a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was spotted at Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co MD.
Three CACKLING GEESE were seen this week, one Jan 1 near Bombay Hook NWR near the intersection of DE9 with CR 338 (Kent Co DE), another Jan 1 in MD at Centennial Pk (Howard Co), and one Jan 7 at Loch Raven Res (Baltimore Co MD). The EURASIAN WIGEON continues at Prime Hook NWR (Sussex Co DE), with sightings Jan 1 & 6. A few COMMON EIDERS were reported: three at Ocean City Inlet (Worcester Co MD) on Jan 1, and one in Cape Charles VA (Northampton Co) on Jan 1, 5, & 6. The HARLEQUIN DUCK continues at Fort Armistead Pk (Baltimore Co MD), with sightings on Jan 1, 3, & 5.
GREAT CORMORANTS were seen at several locations along the coast: four at Indian R Inlet (Sussex Co DE) on Jan 1 & 6, one in Cape Charles VA on Jan 6, and up to four (Jan 4) along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (Northampton Co VA). Thirteen AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen at Blackwater NWR (Dorchester Co MD) on Jan 1. BROWN PELICANS were also seen, eight at Black Walnut Pt (Talbot Co MD) on Jan 1, one immature in Cambridge MD on Jan 5, and 18 at the Kiptopeke Hawk Watch (Northampton Co VA), also on Jan 5.
Maryland hosted several AMERICAN BITTERNS, one at Deal Island WMA (Somerset Co) on Jan 1, another at Blackwater NWR on Jan 1 & 4, and a third on Jan 6 at Hughes Hollow in Montgomery Co. Surprising counts of 13 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were reported from Hains Pt DC (SW) on Jan 1 & 5, and a single was seen Jan 5 at Susquehanna SP, Cecil Co MD.
"At least" 18 NORTHERN HARRIERS were reported at Blackwater NWR on Jan 7. Single ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were reported in MD, one along Cedar Crk Rd (Dorchester Co) on Jan 2 & 7, one in Grantsville (Garrett Co) on Jan 3, and another, possibly an intergrade, near the intersection of New Windsor & McKinstry Mill Rds (Frederick Co) on Jan 5.
A SORA was spotted Jan 1 in Kent Co MD at the Morgan Crk Marshes. Two HUDSONIAN GODWITS were reported along Fowler Beach Rd (Sussex Co DE) on Jan 2. Single LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen Jan 1, one at Prime Hook NWR (Sussex Co DE), another at Rumbly Pt MD (Somerset Co).
The BLACK-HEADED GULL continues around the Hunt Valley Town Center (Baltimore Co MD), and another BLACK-HEADED GULL showed up at Indian River Inlet on Jan 1. Three BLACK SKIMMERS continued Jan 3 near the N toll plaza of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
An apparent Pacific (western) plumaged DOWNY WOODPECKER was photographed Jan 5 in a yard in Chesterfield Co VA. TREE SWALLOWS were seen in surprising numbers: 26 at Deal Island on Jan 4, and 150 on Jan 7 along Middletown Branch Rd, Vienna MD (Dorchester Co). A number of single BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES were reported in eastern portions of MD. Single LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported Jan 1 & 6 from along Oland/Lily Pons Rd, Frederick Co MD.
Several birds which should be far south of here by now are stubbornly hanging on. A BLUE-HEADED VIREO was reported Jan 1 in Bridgewater VA, Rockingham Co. The WOOD THRUSH continues at Patterson Pk, Baltimore MD, with sightings Jan 1 & 2. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was spotted at Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co VA, on Jan 6, and another was seen in Salisbury MD (Wicomico Co) on Jan 7. Dyke Marsh also hosted a YELLOW WARBLER on Jan 6. The WILSON'S WARBLER continued Jan 1 & 2 near the Visitors Center of Huntley Meadows Pk, Fairfax Co VA. The YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT continued Jan 3 at Harwoods Mill Res, Newport News VA. The SUMMER TANAGER continued Jan 3 & 7 along Sebring Dr in Columbia MD (Howard Co).
RED CROSSBILLS have been thinly spread over the entire viewing area, but have been greatly outnumbered by the WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in central MD, where a high count of 70 was reported from Soldiers Delight Natural Area, Baltimore Co. Finally, MD has hosted several COMMON REDPOLLS: One at Ft Howard in Baltimore on Jan 3, two in a yard in Anne Arundel Co on Jan 2, one at Ft Smallwood Pk, Anne Arundel Co, on Jan 3 & 5, one flyover in Manchester's Christmas Tree Pk (Carroll Co) on Jan 4, and a flock of four flyovers Jan 7 at Assateague, Worcester Co.
