Hi Everybody:
Before reporting on this morning's sightings i wanted to make a correction on yesterday's report. I mistakenly described the location as Fifteen Mile Creek (which last time I looked was in Green Ridge St.Forest region of Allegany County. What I meant to say was Ten Mile Creek Rd. (thanks for the correction Evelyn R. !).
I spent about an hour early this morning at Hughes Hollow before going to work. I will caution others that may venture out there that there was some hunting going on beyond the dikes. I talked to several hunters before they left the parking lot with hound dogs and they were headed deeper into the woods hunting small game; they said rabbits today. I stayed on the dikes and other than several distantly heard shots and barking dogs there were still enough birds to make it interesting. A thin layer of ice dominated the majority of the impoundments. There were some small areas of open water and in the impoundment to the east there were 5 GADWALL.
It was delightful to hear a WINTER WREN SINGING almost nonstop for about 5 minutes at 7:45 AM. A pair of RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were calling off and on.I was slightly surprised to see a pair of WOOD DUCKS fly into the second impoundment to the west. Most surprising in walking back to the car was a sighting of a female COMMON GOLDENEYE at the far end of the first impoundment to the west.
I then took a quick ride part way down Sycamore Landing Rd (just past the 2nd bridge). here I saw one and then heard two more RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and also saw three BROWN CREEPERS.
