Hi all,
Last year I sent out a document that had a few tables with interesting year-end ebird statistics. I received some positive feedback from a few other 'stataholics', so I've decided to run the same tables for 2012. Included are a breakdown of species and checklists by month and county, top 20 most and least observed species, and a look at changes in species reports from 2011 to 2012.
Some highlights - eBirders submitted a record 58,180 checklists within MD in 2012 (a 17.8% increase over 2011). Kudos to birders in Howard County; they had the biggest jump in checklists from 2011 at +54.3% and now rank as the second most ebirded county! It total, ebirders reported 5,463 county ticks and 2,826 month ticks for the year. Numbers which put all but a few of our personal lists to shame.

Just another reminder to use caution in interpreting increases/declines in a species checklist percentage. There are a whole slew of reasons why a species might 'decline' on ebird from one year to another. Particularly in 2012, you'll notice a consistent decline in most waterfowl. When strong trends like this occur, it might be more informative to look at species that actually break the habitat trend (ie a waterfowl species that increases when others all decrease). Of course, it would also be better to look at species changes by season instead of an average over the whole year. I might have to save that for a rainy day sometime. Anyway...hope you enjoy.
