Hi Everybody:
I left work at 3 PM. After a quick stop and scan at Riley's Lock...(no ducks, just American Coots, Ring-billed Gulls and one Herring Gull) I drove down to Pennyfield Lock and walked north in search of the Great Egret. Opposite the parking lot on the Canal I had a COOPER'S HAWK soar overhead. As I approached the Dierssen Tract wetland area the northern-most impoundment was teeming with waterfowl. Mallards were everywhere; I counted 80 of them. There were also 12 N. SHOVELERS in various plumages and also one female N.PINTAIL. I also saw my FOY SWAMP SPARROW. The GREAT EGRET was actively feeding in the canal.
I then returned to my car. This morning when I decided to leave work early I thought I would see if I could hear any early sign of woodcocks on Sycamore Landing Rd since they were expecting the temperature to approach 50 degrees F. This never materialized and my expectations were very low for woodcocks but I ventured into one of the fields at dusk anyway. I did hear 3 different BARRED OWLS calling. The nicest surprise was a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON that flew overhead and called twice.
