I did a landscape plan for our property for school. We planted River Birch, Winterberry Holly, Red Chokeberry, Redbuds, White Oak, Eastern Red Cedar, White Pine, Arborvitae Green Giant and Norway Spruce and Serviceberry. Except for the Norway Spruce and Arborvitae everything else was native to this area. I also used the U.S Fish & Wildlife Service publication called "Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping" which is a nice reference.

I like the look and appeal of the Norway Spruce, especially since it attracts winter finches. Does anyone have any pros and cons for this evergreen? I am open to any and all suggestions/recommendations.

The Carroll County Forestry Board is having a workshop this coming Saturday, 1/12/13, entitled The Woods in Your Backyard, targeting small property owners and their yards. More info can be found at:

http://www.naturalresources.umd.edu/Events.html#WBY

They are hopefully again going to be giving away 25 free native trees to small howeowners in Carroll County. I participated last year and all of my trees survived The workshop sounds very interesting, wish I could attend. There is a $40 registration fee, which includes a text book.

Trees I got included 5 each of White and Pin Oak, American Plum, Red osier Dogwood, and hazelnut. A great deal, for free! Check the local paper or email them at <ccforestryboard...> for more info.
