Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from January 9, 2013
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, January 2013, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
Depositional slurry now covering the southern cells at the project site has forced thousands of Lesser Scaup and Green-winged Teal from the island, while some late transient Tundra Swan and American Goldeneye have arrived recently. Encouraging is the presence of hundreds of American Black Duck, while disappointing has been near absence of transient and/or wintering Northern Shoveler, usually a mainstay of the site waterfowl. Brown Pelican had a big surge up the Chesapeake for a few weeks in November, then receded, but are now appearing again as a few have been reported in several localities lately.
Most exciting on the latest census was a meadowlark, not seen at the site for several years. --- Jan Reese
