Subject: [MDBirding] On the way to Ocean City

Sorry for the late post, but the place I am staying in OC has no internet access. Most of this will be a repeat of what others have seen anyway.

Wednesday Jan 9

Tufted Duck -- about 11:00AM at the Mears Point Marina with 2 Lesser Scaup-very close to the dock. I also saw a possible Great Cormorant. I need to check photos (distant bird).

Barrow's Goldeneye -- about 12:20PM on the Talbot side of the Rt 50 bridge fairly far from the bank loosely associated with a female Common Goldeneye. I also saw a Horned Grebe close in to the bank under the bridge. No Brown Pelican seen.

Redhead -- about 12:50PM on Oakley Street in with the big raft of Canvasbacks and Lesser Scaup

Usual species at Blackwater, but no American White Pelican. Highlights 4 Wilson's Snipe and a large flock of Dunlin.

Peregrine Falcon on Route 16 at the railroad tracks before you reach Route 50.

Thursday Jan 10 -- I focused on Somerset County trying to find a closeout bird and add to my pitiful county list.

Deal Island was quiet; on Green Dumpster Road -- several Northern Harriers, a nice mixed flock of both Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs and 3 Hooded Mergansers; on Riley Roberts Road -- Clapper Rail, Forster's Tern, lots of Gadwall and Pintail. No American Wigeon which used to be there in abundance.

Messick Pond/Boat Ramp -- not much

At the corner of Lover's Lane and Route 413, we ran into a nice feeding flock; 2 Pine Siskins, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown-headed Nuthatch, and a Chipping Sparrow in with other assorted species. A cooperative Red-shouldered Hawk looked on.

No Nashville Warbler in Salisbury.

No out of the ordinary gulls at Salisbury Landfill (although we didn't stay too long), but I did see Hodded Mergansers, Ring-necked Duck, and Ruddy Duck.

Ocean City Inlet held the usual; highlights were high numbers of Purple Sandpipers and Bonaparte's Gulls. No Common Eider or Harlequin Duck, but it was getting dark and I wasn't there long.

Friday, Jan 11 -- 2 Northern Gannets from the condo, no other birding, only house hunting.
