Subject: [MDBirding] American White Pelicans @ Blackwater

Since American White Pelican has been mentioned a couple of times lately on the list serve, I should report that I counted 40 yesterday at Blackwater NWR.

I had noticed that someone reported them from the observation platform, so I scoped from there but did not see them. I stopped not very far around the Wildlife Drive, looked back toward the east, and saw a line of them resting on the mudflat. I could see them well through the scope and took a couple of pictures, which of course do not show all the birds. Now it's possible my number is off by one or two, as some were lying down and hard to see, but the light was excellent and I panned up and down the line. I believe that 40 is a realistic count.

I think this is the old-fashioned way to present photos, but anyway: http://www.flickr.com/photos/68415932@N07/8368538655/in/photostream

I also found the TUFTED DUCK at the Piney Narrows yesterday morning, but it took an hour and a half. I finally saw her from the west side of the narrows. She was floating and diving near Annie's (restaurant) and subsequently went behind a bulkhead. My blurry documentation photo is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/68415932@N07/8368447199/in/photostream
