Hi all,
Just wanted to share some of today's highlights in Dorchester County. A Western Sandpiper seen at Blackwater NWR along wildlife drive was a nice surprise. It was with 15 dunlin at stop #9. The flock was rather flighty but with some patience, I finally got decent views and photos. A bit exciting since it was my first in winter in the state. Also of note were 36 American White Pelicans along wildlife dr (seen on my second pass at 130pm, only ~20 earlier). Another highlight for the day was the continuing Tree Swallow flock along Decoursey bridge road. I estimated about 400 birds. I found it pretty interesting just to watch the flock, as it seemed a bit different from how usual tree swallow flocks act in the fall (though it could have just been the day's weather - chilly and fog). In general, it seemed like they stayed closer together, flew a bit slower, and also perched more frequently. A large portion of the flock was also continuously 'swarming' one tree, leaving, and then 'swarming' another. After getting a head's up from Jim B. about Bestpitch, I also ventured that way and saw the blue-winged teal and long-billed dowitchers. While parked and scanning the shorebirds, a Short-eared Owl came and landed on a post right in front of me. First time I've had one that close and perched.
Lastly, both the Barrow's Goldeneye in Cambridge and the Tufted Duck at Kent Narrows continue.
