Subject: [MDBirding] Frustrating fog

More fog most of the day. We started at Assateague which was pretty quiet. I managed a Brown Thrasher at the entrance to the Life of the Marsh. This boardwalk and the Life of the Forest is closed by the way--has been since Sandy, I guess.

At Old Ferry Landing we watched 14 Sanderling skittering along the boardwalk picking at the shells that the gulls dropped. Fun to watch. A couple of Killdeer deered away while we were there, and I spotted a very distant Horned Grebe.

Highlight of the day: a very close in Razorbill just off South Beach (Bob's photo below with the fog magically gone). It's a good thing it was close in as you couldn't see very far out due to the fog. I texted Tim Carney as I knew he was up at the State Park, and he hurried down to see it. It drifted pretty far north by the time he got there and may still be drifting as far as I know. Tomorrow the inlet! I just noticed that Mike Walsh had one down in the ORV zone, so it is working its way up.

The fog lifted around lunchtime, so after grabbing a bite we headed for Castaways. I had just enough time to see a couple of Willets, 1 Black-bellied Plover, several Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Ruddy Turnstones, and a zillion Dunlin before the island and the flats to the south disappeared in the fog again. We tried Skimmer and the inlet, but the fog was too dense to see anything. Maybe tomorrow.
