Top birds this week are TUFTED DUCK* and BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* in MD, and WESTERN GREBE* in VA and DE.
Other birds of interest include waterfowl, EARED GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, WHITE IBIS, GOLDEN EAGLE, SANDHILL CRANE, BLACK-HEADED GULL, ICELAND GULL, RAZORBILL, SHORT-EARED OWL, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, HOUSE WREN, SNOW BUNTING, warblers, SUMMER TANAGER, sparrows, INDIGO BUNTING, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, crossbills, and COMMON REDPOLL.
The TUFTED DUCK* continued at Kent Narrows in Queen Anne's Co MD, with sightings through the week from the Mears Point Marina or Red Eye's Dock Bar. A second possible TUFTED DUCK*, a female, was seen at Fort Smallwood, Baltimore, MD on Jan 12. The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE* was seen several days at the Choptank River bridge in Cambridge MD (Talbot Co, MD side). The WESTERN GREBES* at Lake Anna, Spotsylvania Co VA, were found again on Jan 12 and 13. Another was seen from Beach Plum Island SP, Sussex Co, DE on Jan 13.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was on the grounds of Sts Peter and Paul Church, Easton, Talbot Co, MD on Jan 14. Two ROSS'S GEESE were along Frederica Rd, Kent Co, DE on Jan 12. A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on Jan 13. CACKLING GOOSE sightings include Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore, MD on Jan 13; near the bike path just north of Belle Haven Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Jan 13; Harrison Rd, Fauquier Co, VA on Jan 13 and 14; and at Blackwater NWR on Jan 13. A EURASIAN WIGEON continued at Dead Man's Cove, Loch Raven Reservoir, Baltimore Co, MD. Up to three EURASIAN WIGEON have been found along Prime Hook Rd, Prime Hook NWR, Sussex Co, DE. Another EURASIAN WIGEON was in Swan Cove, Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on Jan 12. A female KING EIDER was near the north jetty of Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co, DE on Jan 9. A HARLEQUIN DUCK was found in Herrington Harbor, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Jan 14. Three HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen at the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on Jan 13.
An EARED GREBE was seen from Assateague Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD on Jan 12. Up to 40 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen at Blackwater NWR through Jan 14. A flock of 59 WHITE IBIS were spotted in the Whitehurst Tract, Princess Anne WMA, Virginia Beach, VA on Jan 8.
An adult GOLDEN EAGLE soared over Key Wallace Dr near Blackwater NWR on Jan 12. A SANDHILL CRANE has been seen for months near Deep Landing Rd and New Enterprise Ct, Calvert Co, MD.
The BLACK-HEADED GULL continues around the Hunt Valley Town Center, Baltimore Co MD. A third year ICELAND GULL was seen along Prime Hook Rd on Jan 12 and at Fowler Beach on Jan 13. As many as 16 RAZORBILLS were seen in the Indian River Inlet on Jan 12 and 13. Another RAZORBILL was seen from Assateague Island SP on Jan 13. A RAZORBILL was spotted at the Ocean City Inlet on Jan 13.
A SHORT-EARED OWL flew over the old landfill at the Blue Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery Co, MD on Jan 9. Another perched by the roadside at Bestpitch, Dorchester Co, MD on Jan 13. A field at the intersection of Old Tavern Rd and Mt Eccentric Rd, Fauquier Co, VA had 15 NORTHERN HARRIERS and 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS on Jan 13.
At least three of the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS in the area continued: one in a back yard in North Beach, Calvert Co, MD at 9119 Bay Ave (visitors welcome), one in a yard in Crofton, MD (contact 443-867-4997 or <rickdove128...>) and another in VA, at Green Spring Garden Pk, Fairfax Co.
A few BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES ventured away from the Blue Ridge, there were sightings at Patuxent Research Refuge North Tract, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Jan 13 and at Blandy Experimental Farm, Clarke Co, VA on Jan 13.
A few birds generally here only in summer were found including a HOUSE WREN at Fort Howard Park, Baltimore, MD on Jan 11; a continuing female SUMMER TANAGER on Martin Rd, Columbia, Howard Co, MD; a female INDIGO BUNTING at Wellington Neck, Northampton Co, VA on Jan 9 and 12; and a BALTIMORE ORIOLE in Powhatan, VA on Jan 10.
A SNOW BUNTING was seen at Ft Smallwood, Baltimore, MD on Jan 12. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found on Jan 9 and 10 at Fort Howard Park. Another ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen along the bike path north from Belle Haven Park on Jan 12 and 13. Also along the path was a NASHVILLE WARBLER. Another NASHVILLE WARBLER was along the Haul Rd in Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on Jan 12 and 13. Audubon's form of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was spotted at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, Calvert Co, MD on Jan 13. A possible BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER* made a brief appearance in a backyard in Silver Spring, Montgomery Co, MD on Jan 9. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen near the visitor center in North Point SP, Baltimore Co, MD on Jan 10.
A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was found on a private farm in Dutton, Mathews Co, VA on Jan 12. Two NELSON'S SPARROWS were seen along Fowler's Beach Rd, Prime Hook NWR on Jan 12.
A BREWER'S BLACKBIRD was near Fleetwood and Aden Rds, Stafford Co, VA on Jan 12.
Once again there were numerous sightings of crossbills and COMMON REDPOLL in this irruption winter. RED CROSSBILL was frequently seen at the Patuxent Research Refuge North Tract, Anne Arundel Co, MD and at Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE. Other sites for RED CROSSBILL included Kiptopeke SP, Northampton Co, VA on Jan 9; Assateague Island SP on Jan 13; and Soldiers Delight Natural Area, Baltimore Co, MD on Jan 13. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL flocks and smaller numbers of COMMON REDPOLL were frequently found at Fort Smallwood, Anne Arundel Co, MD; Fort Howard, Baltimore Co, MD; and Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA. Other WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL sites included North Point SP on Jan 8; White Ground Rd near Boyds, Montgomery Co, MD on Jan 12; a backyard in College Park, Prince Georges Co, MD on Jan 13; Barrel House Rd in Laurel, Prince Georges Co, MD on Jan 9 and 12; Cape Henlopen SP on Jan 12; and Rocky Gap SP, Allegany Co, MD on Jan 11. COMMON REDPOLL was also seen at 127th St in Ocean City, MD on Jan 12 and a backyard in Georgetown, DE on Jan 11.
