So we decided to do some car birding in Dorchester County since it was raining most of the day. We saw 6 Wood Ducks on a pond on Bucktown Road near the turn to Decoursey Bridge Road. A Virginia Rail grunted at me while I was looking for the Golden Eagle (no) at Decoursey Bridge.
I finally saw the dollops of American White Pelicans at Blackwater, and the Barrow's Goldeneye put on a better show than last week when I only had a very distant view. Lots of American Pipits on Key Wallace and several big flocks of Common Grackles in the area. One got my heart fluttering when I saw white; unfortunately the white turned out to be the rump and a couple of tail feathers. An interesting looking bird. Then we saw one that was very leucistic--almost all white.
We couldn't come up with the Greater White-fronted Goose in Easton.
Following a gracious tip from Mark Hoffman, we visited a feeder in Snow Hill to see a Selasphorus sp. Very cooperative bird, and Bob may have gotten a photo of the fanned tail for ID. Stay tuned.
We finished at the inlet at about 4:30PM in a cold, stiff wind that was blowing lots of liquid around. To my delight as we drove up a male Common Eider flew from the north jetty over the south jetty. A brief but good look at a bird that I thought I was going to miss on this trip.
We are headed back to Frederick tomorrow. What I want to know is where in Wicomico County do you find ducks? I can't understand it. Did the county put a sign up at the borders that no ducks are allowed here or did they all beat a hasty retreat in the face of superior fire power?
