Got several tally hand counters from Staples last summer for less than $
5.00 each. They are easy to use and helpful for total number counts in
several settings. We use them particularly in fall migration of songbirds
through mountain gaps, when it is often impossible to ID each individual
bird due to fog, wind, vegetation, and large numbers of transients. At
least this way one person can focus on getting total numbers of
migrants per unit of time while others are identifying as many as possible.
