Subject: [MDBirding] Re: NORTHERN LAPWINGS - not yet!

I worked at home today and went out for a quick break/lunch to look for Lapwings at nearby ag fields. I checked Mt Calvert, some private farms, and Selby's Landing (Mt Calvert and Selby's are part of Patuxent River Park, a PG County park). I didn't find any of course, but got excited at Selby's when I started seeing numerous Killdeer and snipe. Conditions were excellent, with lots of puddles, and I am still hopeful that one may show up somewhere in MD.

For PG, I think trying Selby's Landing, Merkle, Aquasco, and the fields around Beltsville (BARC area) is as good a bet as any. I will continue to look around southern PG (since I bird here all the time regardless!), but maybe birders who live or work near Beltsville can periodically have a look at the ag fields there around BARC. Besides the good numbers of Killdeer and snipe today, the other interesting bird of note was the Ross's goose, which is continuing (at Selby's) from this fall.
