At least 2 Common Redpolls are still at Fort Howard Park, Baltimore County, as of 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, January 17.
I was watching 3 White-winged Crossbills eating from Sweet Gum seed balls this morning, when I became aware that two Common Redpolls were sitting together fairly low in another Sweet Gum tree quite close to the play area in Fort Howard Park. Unfortunately, at that very moment someone came by with a Chesapeake Bay retriever in tow, normally a breed I'm quite fond of. By the time the owner had finished proudly observing that her handsome pet was "the state dog of Maryland" and the dog itself had stopped barking in loud approval, the Redpolls and all other birds had moved on, not to return.
In the waters just off the park were small groups of Bufflehead and Lesser Scaup, together with a pair of Long-tailed Ducks, which proved to be my first for this species in Baltimore County.
Close to the wooden pier at the end of Old Bay Shore Rd. in nearby North Point Park I found two Mute Swans (still common here?) and a female plumaged Common Goldeneye.
Later in the morning I tried, but failed, to find the wintering Wood Thrush in Patterson Park, Baltimore City.
