Following up on my earlier post about McMillen Reservoir (by Howard University) in DC: The Redhead was a female and was actively feeding within the Canada Geese and Ring-necked Ducks on the north end. The Cackling Goose was on the hill beyond what appears to be a white guard house on the hill on the east side of the north end. Despite having seen several very small Canada Geese this year, this is my first bona fide Cackling Goose--small size, short, thick neck, stubby bill and high forehead. The back was not frosty, and the breast was not lighter colored at the base of the stocking. The Lesser Black-backed Gull was a first year bird sitting on the floating pipe on the east side. I could not find the Goldeneyes, which was my goal in heading over there.
