I made a brief stop at McMillan Reservoir this (Sat) morning and counted about 88 ducks (hard to get an exact count with all diving. Most were Ring-neckeds, and Lesser Scaup was next most common. Mixed in was at least one female Redhead. There was another female that looked good for Redhead, but it wasn't very cooperative and the light was really harsh. There was also 1 basic plumaged Ruddy Duck and a few Mallards, along with some Coots.
I was scoping from the north end, standing next to the fence and a security guard approached from within the facility. He said I couldn't do that. I asked him what I was doing wrong and pointed out that I was not taking pictures and just looking at the birds, but all he said, again, was "you can't do that." Not wanting to cause trouble, I packed up and left.
This was the first time anyone has approached me there, though I don't bird it that often. I wonder if they're just being extra vigilant given the inauguration, or if they're paying closer attention since more birders are going there. I also wonder if they would have said something if I was standing further back, like on the sidewalk. Has anyone else had this experience there?
