Subject: [MDBirding] Red Crossbills at N. Tract, 1/19/13

Hi everyone,

Today I made a trip over to Patuxent's North Tract to try for the Red Crossbills that have been there. I hiked the Pine Tree trail and then east along the wildlife loop up to the gravel turn off for Lake Allen. Once I got to this intersection,
I waited and listened. Most of what I had were regular birds such as: BLJA, CACH, WTSP, DEJU, RBNU, GCKI, etc.. But, just before I had planned to leave, (at 1:45pm), I heard some Red Crossbills, but, couldn't see them. Right after
first hearing them,a small flock of 8 to 10 birds flew over the large Va. Pines fromthe left, over the road and towards Lake Allen. It was a brief look with my bins, but, I could see that they were about a 50/50 split of males andfemales, they
had no wingbars, short forked tails and called as they flew off.
